Mastery Of The Emotions

February 20, 20247 min read

Intro  Do you have the Family, relationships, business or career you want? Frame it today!  However in order to do that we must master our emotions.

Mastery of the Emotions

As I talk to so many people of diverse ages and socio economic groups (who would all tick the christian box on the census) I am deeply moved by the emotional turmoil in their lives. It may be family turmoil perhaps; children, parent, partner or the lack of a significant other.

It may be business, career, finance there are so many issues that have the potential to effect our emotional stability.

As believers in the Lord Jesus He is our stability. That is spirit, soul and body.

Gen 4:3-16 especially verse 7 which says, "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it." NASB

Gen 3:6 Adam chose Eve over God

We must get control over sin. We were born again out of sin into new life. That is to say we need to make correct choices, God choices. There’s a very old saying everything that glitters is not gold. In our lives sometimes those things that are most appealing to us are exactly the wrong thing for us.

We need to stop justifying our soulish choices by telling anyone who will listen - ‘Well, God knows my heart.’

Think about that for a moment  - God does exactly know your heart. You can tell me oh Pastor I really wanted to be here or there or do this or that but I just couldn’t but God knows my heart.

 Yes, he does!

Today no one wants to acknowledge sin. It’s a problem; or a condition/addiction or those great buzz words it is a disorder or a syndrome, we flirt with sin as though it’s an attractive suitor. That’s exactly what Eve was doing in the garden.

Do not be deceived what you do not master will master you.

In Deuteronomy 28:13 it says; 'GOD will make you the head, not the tail; you'll always be the top dog, never the bottom dog, as you obediently listen to and diligently keep the commands of GOD, your God, that I am commanding you today.' TPT

When fear senses you are not in charge it will pounce. Let's look at that another way; if we do not have a faith filled response to the circumstance the symptoms of fear will pounce.

We stress to our children that the intellectual side of life is important however, so is the emotional we must have balance.

We have a responsibility to ensure our children are emotionally sound. Our emotional life must be considered seriously. Most of what we say and do is governed by an emotion.

As adults in the natural sense but also as mature Christians we need to be emotionally stable.

Psalm 42:5 'Why are you in despair, O my soul? and why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence'

Psalm 42:11 'Why are you in despair, O my soul? and why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and My God.'

Psalm 43:5 'Why are you in despair, O my soul? and why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him, the help of my countenance and My God.

Note these three verses are the same. Remembering if it’s in the scripture once it’s important, if it’s repeated twice or three times in quick succession it’s crucial.

Sufficient to say our hope, our trust our dependence should be in God.

God has called us to be balanced, consistent, sound and true. We are to walk in the spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23 'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, Patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law' NASB

We cannot allow feelings or momentary problems to control us. Always operating in the Spirit letting our good fruit be displayed.

So what do we do?

1. Build on the foundation of who God is.

Matt 16:16-18 'Simon Peter answered, "you are the Christ, the Son of the living God". And Jesus said to him "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it."'

Remind yourself often. How are you supposed to face lions when we are unable to deal with sheep.

2. Build on obedience to God’s Word

Luke 6:46 'Why do you call Me, "Lord, Lord" and do not do what I say? NASB

James 1:22  'But be ye doers of the word, and not merely hearers, who delude themselves.'

It occurs to me if we are resistant to whatever it it is God is telling us we are actually saying we don't trust Him. We can say whatever we like but what do we do?

3. Dig Deep.

Luke 6:47-48 'Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like; he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occured, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built' NASB

We need to redig the ancient wells. No substitute to digging into the deep things of God. The stronger your foundation the stronger you stand.

4. Build on the old waste places.

Isaiah 58:12 'Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins; You will raise up the age -old foundations; and you will be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of the streets in which to dwell.' NASB

God wants to restore not remove. Not only can you have your life restored but you can correct it for the next generation.

5. Be open to God!

Nehemiah 4:7-9 'Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the Ashodites heard that the repair of the walls of Jerusalem went on, and that the breaches began to be closed, they were very angry. All of them conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause a disturbance in it. But we prayed to our God, and because of them we set up a guard against them day and night. NASB

We need to seek God in our situation pray but we also need to do something the natural. Confusion is what gets you.

What do you stand for? If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything. We live between the ideal and the real. The problem we have is often immaturity v’s complacency.

We get caught up in the dream or we give up on the dream. We must live with ideal that we are victorious and never give up.

Learn what it is to walk after God. Don’t let issues emotionally control us. When we get caught up emotionally in something, it's usually when things aren’t working the way we believe they should, what do we do then? Stamp our feet, pout, sulk, cry, yell or perhaps the best one is have a pity party and do all those things.

Whatever, you know if we behave like that we are putting ourselves, our desires and dreams before God. We are saying we are more important or more correct.

God is looking for a people not moved by emotion but by His Word.

This is my Bible

I am what it says I am!

I can do what it says I can do!

I have what it says I have!

It is the indisputable, irrefutable, all powerful Word of the Living God.

Hebrews 11:3 ' By Faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the Word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible'

Romans 4:17b 'even God , who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist'

Jonah 2:8 'Those who regard vain idols forsake their faithfulness'

these scriptures are all from the NASB

“Wise people are builders – They build families, businesses, communities. And through intelligence and insight their enterprises are established and endure. Proverbs 24:3 TPT
