Listening For God

January 09, 20242 min read

So last time we were talking about listening to God for His strategies as we journey through the storms around us.

It occurs to me that whilst many of us know how to get into that place with God, so many people who love The Lord don’t.

How do we get there? What does it look like?

To get there it is as simple as, we still ourselves and look up.

‘I will lift up my eyes to the hills — from where comes my help? My help comes from the Lord Who made heaven and earth’ Psalm 121:1-2 NJKV.

Sounds too simple doesn’t it? There are many different ways to arrive there. It's important to use a pathway that we are comfortable with. (We are then more likely to do it.)

We can look up by singing songs of praise, in prayers of praise and thanksgiving. We can read and meditate on the Word of God. Maybe you can play some music or perhaps you prefer the quietness. They are all correct and I know I use them all from time to time.

The important thing is you get into that place with the Lord and wait upon Him, pondering, musing, meditating or ruminating on the Word. We just have to do it!

This is a discipline that we must learn. Too often we pray and shoot off prayers like machine gun bullets, yet never wait for Him to speak. Prayer is a conversation with our Father, it’s not a monologue.

I expect Him to talk to me and He does, through the written word or prophetic word or song. He may speak to you in a dream or a vision. Sometimes He speaks to me in the garden or through the everyday things of life. And then there is that still small voice whispering into my spirit precious words from the throne.

However, we hear or see, it always will agree with the scriptures and that is our plumb line. As we are learning and developing in the Lord it is always good to share these things with someone who is further down the road. A mentor will help you to understand the language of heaven and receive a clearer picture of what God is saying to you.

So as the things of the world try to sow fear into us we are safe in the Word, in Christ Jesus the rock of our salvation.

‘You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed upon you, because he trusts you.’ Isaiah 26:3 NKJV.

Read Proverbs 1:33 in relation to the things God is speaking to you.

And above all, Be encouraged!
